Life just isn't valued any more. In nearly all ways, people just don't see the sacredness or importance of the most simple thing we have to call our own: LIFE.
How can we expect people treat animals, vegetation or ourselves with respect if they can't even show support after disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis or volcanic eruptions. As the death/missing toll for the most recent disaster crosses into the thousands, all information I can find on the topic discusses economic issues, governmental issues or debt issues. People are seemingly missing the point that these are actual lives, lost, missing or flat-out taken.
Where the fuck is the compassion? Each and everyone one of these missing or dead people have had a mother and a father. Perhaps siblings, children of their own. Regardless of whether they were part of a workforce, whether they were thinkers, writers, teachers, philosophers, musicians, they had one thing in common: They were people. They were conscious beings, and a price cannot be placed on that.
This society is killing us all. Life is invaluable, and if it is dictated that we 'MUST' take into account financial issues, can it not wait for some form of normality to be restored? There are more urgent matters in life than money.
Unfortunately, speaking like this gets me the label of 'naive', and I am repeatedly told that I don't know what I'm talking about. Screw that. Life is the one certainty we have in this existence, and I'll be damned if I'm expected to stare at the TV and passively take in the streams of numbers and information like the consumer they want me to be. How jaded must our world be to care more about a bunch of paper notes which represent nothing more than a debt of something that doesn't even exist, and bypass the real issues that are screaming at us in our faces?
The sad fact is that, upon the occurrence of a natural disaster, prior to any concern over their people and their population, world leaders ask one question: "How much will this cost us?". As death tolls rise, the question changes to "Who can we borrow money from?", and eventually, once the world settles back down and other countries begin to forget about the initial disaster, we're all reminded of how terrible the event was by increased food and fuel prices, cheaper airline tickets and even more disequilibrium in power over countries.
In trying to assess damages, the dent in workforce is noted, not the loss of lives.
In trying to assess how much time will be needed to restore a country, costs are taken into account, not global grievance time.
In trying to 'help' a country ruined by devastation, old debts are brought up, bribes are given and people are forgotten.
Where the hell is humanity? When did we forget we are brethren, and care more about the weight in our pockets than the weight on our hearts?
HUMAN RACE, GET OFF YOUR FUCKING KNEES.
